We are undertaking new research designed to deepen understanding of the economic, social and cultural contribution of Gaelic across Scotland - ‘Ar Cànan Ar Cultar Ar Beartas (Our language Our Culture Our Prosperity).

This major study will help identify where targeted investment in Gaelic can deliver the greatest long-term benefits for communities and businesses.

Commissioned by 91Ó°ÊÓ in partnership with Scottish Government, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, VisitScotland and Skills Development Scotland, the research is being undertaken by GC Insight together with Reference Economics and Lasair Ltd.

About the research

The study will:

  • assess the current social and economic value of Gaelic

  • explore its social and cultural contribution

  • identify future opportunities in key sectors, including tourism, creative industries and community development

  • highlight where support will have the greatest impact for Gaelic speakers, learners and businesses

Why it matters

Gaelic plays a significant and growing role in the region’s identity and economic potential. From tourism and digital media to food and drink, creative industries and community-led enterprises, increasing numbers of organisations are embracing Gaelic to:

•    strengthen brand authenticity
•    build deeper customer and visitor connections
•    attract new audiences
•    create employment opportunities
•    support vibrant, confident communities

This research will provide the evidence base needed to guide future strategy and ensure Gaelic continues to thrive as part of a modern, innovative regional economy.
